BOOMING LFP BATTERY DEMAND IN CHINA UNDERSCORES THE VALUE OF NEW HIGH PURITY PHOSPHATE RESOURCES
James McFadden, CFA (June 5, 2026)
A recent article (https://english.news18a.com/news/english_277511.html) published by the Internet Info Agency, a news outlet based in China which provides information on the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sector, provides perspective on the remarkable increases in China’s demand for LFP cathode active material (CAM) for batteries used in energy storage applications, robotics and electric vehicles.
According to the article, China produced 2.73 million tonnes of LFP CAM in the first half of 2026, a 61.5% increase over the first half of 2025, and is on pace to produce about 6.2 million tonnes in full year 2026. Furthermore, as LFP demand continues to grow in the second half of 2026, LFP demand in 3Q 2026 may be 30% higher than in 2Q 2026 with energy storage applications poised to surpass new energy vehicles as the primary growth driver for LFP CAM.
The demand for LFP CAM is so strong in China that leading China-based LFP producers have full order books and are operating at full capacity. In fact, LFP CAM prices have soared as much 80% as of early July 2026 compared with June 2025.
By mass, high-purity phosphate comprises about 61% of an LFP battery cathode. Such unprecedented LFP CAM demand will have obvious implications on the requirement for high purity phosphoric acid in China. The growth path (at the current 30% rate of growth) is reflected in the table below expressed in millions of annual tonnes of LFP CAM requirement and associated purified phosphoric acid (PPA) needs :
The demand for sources of high purity phosphate and PPA is beginning to explode and it is not a wonder that China has already placed export controls on phosphate related exports.
An obvious question: As global PPA demand continues to grow along with LFP CAM, what entities can supply at least some of the newly required high purity phosphate that will be required as the LFP battery supply chain begins to be on-shored outside of China? It is estimated that the entire rest of the world ex-China produces no more than 3 million tonnes of PPA which is almost all destined to traditional use and not currently used for LFP CAM production.
First Phosphate seems poised to become one of these new and vital suppliers of high purity phosphate for North America and Europe. Indeed, igneous anorthosite phosphate deposits, such as the First Phosphate Bégin-Lamarche property, are extremely rare and constitute the top 1% of all global phosphate deposits.
More specifically, 91.1% of First Phosphate’s high purity igneous phosphate converts directly into battery-grade phosphoric acid with recyclable by-products and minimal environmental impacts. First Phosphate Corp. is the only igneous anorthosite phosphate projects fully and singularly focused on the development of a mine-to-market LFP battery supply chain in North America.
Through a vertically integrated mine-to-market LFP battery supply chain strategy, First Phosphate plays a central role in achieving the shared goal of re-onshoring the LFP battery supply chain in North America. First Phosphate has produced LFP battery cells using North American critical minerals including high purity phosphate from its Bégin-Lamarche property.
About First Phosphate Corp.
First Phosphate (CSE: PHOS) (OTCQX: FRSPF) (OTCQX ADR: FPHOY) (FSE: KD0) is a mineral exploration and development and clean technology company dedicated to building and reshoring a vertically integrated mine-to-market supply chain for the production of LFP batteries in North America. Target markets include energy storage, data centers, robotics, mobility, and national security.
First Phosphate’s flagship Bégin-Lamarche property, located in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec, Canada, represents a rare North American igneous phosphate resource producing high-purity phosphate characterized by very low levels of impurities.
